A report with data from over 1,500 Search Inside Yourself global program participants demonstrates the positive impact the program has on mindfulness, emotional intelligence, resilience, stress management, empathy and many more dimensions.

Our mission is extremely important to us. That’s why we’re committed to measuring the impact of our work on an ongoing basis.

For the past few years, we’ve surveyed Search Inside Yourself program participants before and after the 2-day program and one month later, collecting more than 1,500 responses from trainings delivered in 20 countries. The results provide evidence that the Search Inside Yourself program leads to improvement in a broad array of outcomes related to mindfulness and emotional intelligence. Below are a few highlights around the topics of mindfulness, stress, resilience, empathy and compassion.

Mindfulness is the ability to stay present and be aware of what’s happening as it’s happening. This is one of the areas where we notice the greatest improvement for Search Inside Yourself program participants.

I am able to notice when my attention has been pulled away and return it to the present moment.

“After attending the program, I am much more aware of being present and how the space that breathing offers taps into the ability to focus and listen during my interactions.”

Khatiza Van Savage,
Chief Happiness Architect at Insightful Learning Journeys

Surveyed participants reported a reduced level of stress after the Search Inside Yourself program. Through practices primarily around mindfulness, self-awareness and self-management, the program helps individuals increase well-being.

I use a deliberate technique to calm myself when I am in the middle of a stressful situation.

“I highly recommend SIY to anyone looking to improve the way their team works together, enhance their innovative thinking and clarity, reduce stress, improve general well-being, manage difficult conversations and be generally more at peace.”

Barry Margerum,
Chief Strategy Officer, Plantronics

Resilience is the ability to recover from or adjust easily to misfortune or change. Search Inside Yourself teaches practical techniques to help develop emotional resilience, cognitive resilience, equanimity and inner calm.

I feel that I can bounce back quickly after an emotionally challenging situation.

“I would highly recommend the Search Inside Yourself program as part of any leadership development curriculum. The content and case studies were relevant and accessible to a business audience. We were able to incorporate the exercises into our work immediately.”

Karen Hershenson, Studio Leader at Procter & Gamble

Empathy allows us to be in tune with how others are feeling. It can help improve our social interactions on many levels, such as communication and connection. The SIY program explains the neuroscience of empathy and how to develop habits to increase it in daily interactions.

Before I give someone feedback, I try to imagine how I would feel if I were in her/his place.

“As an advocate of the diversity and inclusion movement, I have been asking how someone could realize that they have an unconscious bias toward certain groups and how to get rid of the bias: I found the answer in this course.”

Soh Ling Loke, Global Program Manager – Business Transformation Office, Dell

Compassion is empathy in action. The desire and ability to be of service. Ultimately, compassion helps us build a kinder world. The Search Inside Yourself program teaches how to build compassion at work, as leaders, and in our personal lives.

When someone I work with is hurting in some way, I feel comfortable offering assistance or help.

“This course is an opportunity to take time out of your hectic life and invest in yourself. There are tangible takeaways that can change things for the better, at home and at work.”

Karen Hershenson, Studio Leader at Procter & Gamble

At the Search Inside Yourself Leadership Institute, we believe everyone is a leader. Whether we have a formal role inside an organization, lead efforts in the communities where we live, manage activities for our families or lead our own lives, we all lead in some ways and can improve these skills. The Search Inside Yourself program teaches leadership skills including how to better collaborate and work with other people, manage conflict and have difficult conversations.

When in conflict with someone, I take time to fully understand what is driving their perspective.

“I’m a change manager and leaders need this before they have the ability to manage change well for their people. So ALL leaders need to go.”

Sian Cameron, Qantas

Mindfulness leads to greater well-being

The connection between mindfulness and well-being has been a consistent finding in almost 10 years of research. One study found that two weeks of mindfulness training increased well-being, decreased emotional exhaustion at work, and even increased job satisfaction (Hulsheger et al., 2012).

Mindfulness has been found to increase brain cortex thickness and activation in regions associated with emotional awareness and emotion management (Tang et al., 2015)

Mindfulness leads to greater well-being

Training in the emotional intelligence skill of compassion has been shown to reduce interpersonal stress and improve relationships (Singer 2016Kok et al. 2013).

Greater Emotional intelligence has been correlated with higher manager and leader performance (Kerr, Garvin, Heaton, & Boyle, 2006Rosete & Ciarrochi, 2005).

Mindfulness leads to greater well-being

In a survey conducted by the Institute of Mindful Leadership, 93% of leaders reported that mindfulness training helped them create space for innovation, and nearly 70% said it helped them to think strategically (Institute for Mindful Leadership Survey).

We’re honored to see that our programs are making a positive difference in people’s lives and will continue to collect feedback to ensure we’re assessing the impact of our efforts and making improvements on an ongoing basis.
